Although several years old, I recently stumbled across this multimedia New York Times series discussing sex offenders and civil commitment. Though popular with legislators, the article finds doubts about the effectiveness of civil commitment.

Sex offender registry actually makes things worse for a lot of people, in my opinion. It gives the appearance of being safer, which is why legislators and voters go for it.

It's bad enough that the sex offender law is not perfect and it has it's many faults, but to add this and make it worse?
Finally, the Government argued that the Necessary and Proper Clause justifies Section 4248 because it retains the "power to prosecute" all persons in its custody charged with criminal offenses.

Yes, I also agree with that. Sex offenders are just over acting about that. All things are getting worse because of them.
