Alabama's elected officials are at it again. The Alabama House yesterday unanimously passed a bill which would restrict sex offenders from living within 1,500 feet of any college or university. You can read the text of the bill here. From the Montgomery Advertiser:
The bill by Rep. Jamie Ison of Mobile would also prevent convicted sex offenders from loitering within 500 yards of a college or university.
The bill passed the House Tuesday on a 97-0 vote.
Existing law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of high schools or elementary schools. Ison's bill expands the current law to include colleges and universities.
The bill would not prohibit convicted sex offenders from attending a college or university, but they would not be able to live on campus.
Ironic isn't it? Sex offenders seem to be a greater threat if they surround the college then they would be walking the campus and going to class! These laws are getting crazy and make no rational sense.
