The Belleville News-Democrat has an editorial which asserts that laws which restrict sex offenders "don't protect anyone and give parents a false sense of security." The article notes that there is no research that finds a correlation between sex offenders and the distance they live from a day care, park or school.
In contrast, an editorial for the Palm Beach Post argues that residency restrictions on sex offenders need to be mandated by the state. The newspaper also supports "life sentences for the worst offenders."
As mentioned before, the Governor of Connecticut has proposed a new law requiring registered sex offenders to obtain a driver's license or state identification card that includes a code identifying them as a sex offender. According to the Governor, "it just gives the police department another tool, something else they can use."
One Ohio sheriff's office has been mailing sex offender notifications to residents who live within 1,000 feet of a sex offender. Some residents are unhappy with the measure as it does not distinguish between child offenders and adult offenders.
